Counseling Corner
Using Elf on the Shelf to Build a Growth Mindset! If you use an elf on the shelf this time of year, here are some ways that you can use this to introduce this important skill to your kids:

1. Leaving specific notes of praise. Be on the lookout for specific behaviors that you want to reinforce and have the elf point them out. Just make sure you praise the process and not the person. Also, be sure the praise is specific and gives them information & feedback. For example- “I noticed that you didn’t give up when you were tying your shoes even though you were frustrated. Keep it up.”

  1. Leave challenges. Think about specific ways to help your child step out of their comfort zone. For example- “Try something new today!” or “Tying your shoes takes a lot of practice, try it a new way today.”
  2. Encourage them to look at something in a new way. For example- “Add the word YET to any sentence that starts with I Can’t…. I will be counting how many times I hear the magic word.”
