Jessica Schley

My name is Jessica Ryan Marie Schley and this is my fourth year with Lincoln Charter School.  I teach 11^th grade honors English, 12^th grade regular and honors English, and the Huskins Expository/Argument class.  I attended UNC-Charlotte for both my B.A. and M.A. degrees in English and received my North Carolina Secondary English Teaching degree from Western Carolina University.  I also teach at and work in the Writing Center of Gaston College and have taught at Central Piedmont Community College and UNC-Charlotte. 

My philosophy of education encompasses teaching my students to confidently make connections between their own lives and literature, current events, and the human condition.  My goal for each student is to constantly challenge them to improve their written and oral communication skills as well as help them to discover the life-altering benefits of reading.

Some of my favorite things to do outside of school include swimming, running, yoga, spending time with my family and friends and traveling.  I'm a member and a volunteer at Elevation Church and live in the Dilworth area of Charlotte.  I love to read and write, watch indie and foreign films, study philosophy, and listen to music.  My favorite authors are W. B. Yeats, Truman Capote, Jane Austen, Tana French, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stieg Larsson, C.S. Lewis, John Eldridge and Edgar Allan Poe. 

Some of My Favorite Books are: Other Voices, Other Rooms, Persuasion, Captivating, The Screwtape Letters, Faithful Place, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, Wuthering Heights, and Le Petit Prince.

Some of My Favorite Movies are: The Royal Tennenbaums, Pride and Prejudice, 500 Days of Summer, Lars and the Real Girl, Chocolat, Shakespeare in Love, and What About Bob.
