On October 1st, the Lincolnton campus was filled with students and community members who braved some rain and bad weather to gather and celebrate their Hispanic Heritage. La Fiesta was the name of what we hope will become an annual event at Lincoln Charter.

When Outreach Consultant Carl Lykes realized that the LCS population of Hispanic and Latino students had risen to something like 20% of all students on the campus, he knew it was time to celebrate! This event featured Hispanic artisans from the community, authentic Latin food vendors, and lots of activities for adults and children alike.

Entire families came dressed in their traditional clothing or in some cases, matching t-shirts bearing the name of their home countries.  The highlight of the even was perhaps a parade in which students marched holding signs and banners. Many students draped the flags of their countries around their shoulders in the style of a cape - an outward expression of the empowerment that many reported feeling after the event.
