“Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.
The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts originally launched in 2002 by the nonprofit 9/11 Day with wide support by the 9/11 community and leading national service organizations. This effort first established the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.
As part of this initiative, students have volunteered at local food banks, animal shelters, and assisted living facilities, offering their time to support those in need. They have also participated in campus beautification projects, park cleanups, and partnered with nonprofit organizations to make a positive impact.
In addition to hands-on service, students have engaged in activities that honor first responders and veterans, such as writing letters of appreciation and delivering meals. Some groups have worked with schools and community centers, helping with educational initiatives or organizing donation drives. Through these diverse service opportunities, Lincoln Charter students reflect on the significance of the day while embodying the values of empathy, responsibility, and service.
